What Is a Car Lease?
A lease is essentially a long-term rental agreement between you and a financing company, typically the manufacturer's financial arm, in our case Lexus Financial Services. Most leases run 24, 36, or 48 months, after which you return the vehicle, purchase it outright, or drive away in a brand-new car.
How Lease Payments Are Calculated
Understanding where your monthly payment comes from helps you negotiate with confidence. Three key factors determine your payment:
Capitalized Cost — This is the negotiated selling price of the vehicle. Just like buying, you can and should negotiate this number down. A lower cap cost means lower payments.
Residual Value — This is what the vehicle is projected to be worth at lease end, expressed as a percentage of Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP). Lexus vehicles hold their value exceptionally well, which directly benefits you: a higher residual value means you're financing less depreciation, resulting in lower monthly payments.
Money Factor — Think of this as the interest rate of your lease, expressed as a small decimal. Multiply it by 2,400 to convert it to an approximate Annual Percentage Rate (APR). Your monthly payment covers the depreciation, plus a finance charge, divided across your term.
Upfront Costs to Expect
Most leases require some money due at signing, which typically includes the first month's payment an acquisition fee, security deposit, registration/taxes, and dealer fees
Be cautious of deals advertising extremely low monthly payments that require large down payments. Rolling your costs into a "drive-off" amount that's too high reduces the financial flexibility leasing is known for.
Mileage and Wear
Standard leases include 10,000 to 15,000 miles per year. It's important to estimate your annual mileage honestly, as exceeding your limit results in per-mile charges at lease end. If you tend to place many miles on the odometer via continous trips through I-26, we can customize a higher-mileage lease upfront, which is almost always more economical.
Normal wear is expected and accepted. However, excessive wear such as deep scratches, cracked windshields, damaged tires, or interior staining may incur charges upon return. Lexus Financial Services provides a wear-and-use guide so there are no surprises.
